In the wake of increased surprise audits here are some tips for implementing a full proof safety compliance plan.

Dewitt, NY - June 1, 2010: As the Department of Transportation (DOT) steps up its audits of motor carriers, welding and gases distributors need to be prepared for Safety Compliance Reviews, especially those that are unexpected. In 2009, there were 14,466 Safety Compliance Reviews. 8, 818 of those were conducted by federal inspectors another 5, 648 by state inspectors.

In the current issue of Welding and Gases Today, Michael Dodd, GAWDA's DOT, OSHA & EPA consultant, explains how distributors can be proactive in preparing for audits. Doing so could save you a lot of grief and quite a bit of money. "Do a self assessment; don't wait until DOT calls and schedules a visit," Dodd warns. "Another helpful tool is to have a mock audit done that will cover the same topics that DOT reviews." This allows you to identify problems, make corrections and implement a plan to stay in compliance.

There are some pitfalls distributors should avoid. "Don't fall into the temptation of falsifying records," Dodd urges. "You will get caught, and willfully falsifying records brings the maximum penalties. " It could also place you on DOT's "not to be trusted list."

The top five acute violations in 2009 were: failing to implement an alcohol and/or drug testing program; failing to implement a random controlled substance or alcohol testing program; inadequate or no financial responsibility; having no hazmat security plan in place and allowing a driver to operate with a suspended/revoked CDL.
